My path to medicine
“When I was in high school, I had an exemplary teacher for a physiology class, and I became fascinated with how the human body works so intricately. I majored in biology and applied to medical school, having no idea what type of doctor I might wish to be. I took several rotations during my third year, but Pediatrics was the most appealing. The kids in the hospital amazed me for a couple of reasons; first, they could be so very sick and then often would get well so very rapidly; secondly, even while they were so ill and I had poked and prodded them and treated them with all sorts of vile-tasting medicines, they were very forgiving and still greeted me with joy and acceptance. I came to realize that I wanted to devote my medical career to healing the youngest of us, and I have never regretted that decision. My advising physician in medical school said, “You have solid grades. You could be something better than a pediatrician.” For me, there’s nothing better.”
